‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss Announce New HBO Series ‘Confederate'

“Game of Thrones” show runners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are already looking towards the future. The pair brought their latest series, futuristic war drama “Confederate” to HBO, who gave it a straight-to-series order.
Benioff and Weiss released an official statement for their new show, which was originally a feature film project. But according to the pair, "our experience on Thrones has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO.” The pair will be the show runners on “Confederate,” with Nichelle Tramble (“The Good Wife”), Malcolm Spellman (“Empire”), Carolyn Strauss (“Game of Thrones”) and Bernadette Caulfield (“Games of Thrones”) executive producing.
According to EW, the show explores an alternate timeline where the US South successfully seceded from the Union. Because the Union never brought those states back into the fold, slavery was never abolished. Slavery is now a modern staple of the South, and the ever present battle between the North and South leads to the Third American Civil War (yep, there’s a second one somewhere in there). The Mason-Dixon Line is a demilitarized zone between the regions, and viewers will see people from all sides of the conflict fight over an institution that nearly ripped real-life America apart. From slave hunters, to politicians, to fervent slaveholders hellbent on keeping slavery alive, no stone will be left unturned in the futuristic nightmare.
Production on “Confederate” will begin sometime after the final season of “Game of Thrones.” That final season is expected sometime in 2018 or 2019.
