Johnny Sundstrom, a rancher and the founder of the Siuslaw Institute, lives and works in the middle of the Deadwood Forest. His connection to the forest is at once deeply intimate and practical. He has a wealth of familial ties in the land – one of the old growth trees fell down the day his father-in-law passed away – and he believes that so long as he takes care of the forest, it will in turn take care of him.
