Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult Join Justin Kurzel's 'True History of the Kelly Gang'

The Kelly gang has found its final members. Russell Crowe ("The Nice Guys") and Nicholas Hoult ("Mad Max: Fury Road") have boarded "Macbeth" director Justin Kurzel's latest project, "True History of the Kelly Gang," according to THR. The film is an adaptation of Peter Carey's Booker Prize winning novel of the same name, which tells the story of notorious Australian outlaw Ned Kelly. The outlaw was one of the badland's final bushrangers, which came to an end during a blazing shootout (literally, there's a hotel fire involved) between police and the Kelly Gang.

Crowe and Hoult join George MacKay ("Captain Fantastic") and Essie Davis ("The Badadook"), along with Travis Fimmel ("Vikings") and "Stranger Things'" bad boy with a bad mullet, Dacre Montgomery. Sean Keenan ("Glitch"), Harry Greenwood ("Hacksaw Ridge"), Thomasin McKenzie ("The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies"), and Earl Cave ("Born to Kill") round out the cast of the Gothic Western, which already sounds intriguing. If the film follows the Kellys' real-life story, there will be 1880s-era steel body armor, police shootouts, and more.

Kurzel ("Assassin's Creed") will direct the film off a screenplay from Shaun Grant ("Deadline Gallipoli"). Liz Watts of Porchlight Films, Hal Vogel of Daybreak Pictures and Brad Feinstein of Romulus Entertainment will produce. Carey will executive produce alongside David Aukin from Daybreak, Vincent Sheehan from Porchlight and Joseph F. Ingrassia from Romulus. Romulus is financing, with additional grants from Screen Australia in association with Film Victoria and Film4. Rocket Science will handle international sales, and CAA will handle the film's US rights.

Production on "True History of the Kelly Gang" begins in Australia in 2018.
