'Thor: Ragnarok' is the Hero the Box Office Needs

"Thor: Ragnarok" had the fourth highest opening weekend of 2017--so far, according to Box Office Mojo.
The third installment in the Norse God of Thunder's story far surpassed its predecessors. In fact, it doubled the opening weekend of the first "Thor," with $121 million in the US. The MCU's 17th film opened early in several overseas markets. All told, "Thor: Ragnarok" has earned some $427M worldwide.

Opening in second place is another sequel, "A Bad Moms Christmas." The comedy sequel brought in $17M in North American ticket sales, and another $6M overseas. Despite underwhelming reviews, the ticket sales weren't bad, especially when looking at the declining box office numbers over the past few weeks.

Last week's first place "Jigsaw" dropped to third this week with $6.7M. The horror sequel saw a nearly 60% drop over the last seven days. Horror is generally inexpensive to produce, however, so the film has easily earned back its $10M budget.
The rest of the Top 10 is mostly the same, although some positions have switched around. Fourth place was "Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween" with $4.6M. "Geostorm" finished in fifth with $3M. Blumhouse's "Happy Death Day" dropped to sixth with $2.8M. The Miles Teller film "Thank You for Your Service" earned $2.26M at seventh place. "Blade Runner 2049" dropped from fifth to eighth place with $2.23M. Sony's firefighter drama "Only the Brave" earned $1.9M in ninth. And rounding out the Top 10 is the Christian film "Let there be Light," with $1.6M.
Next week's wide releases are "Daddy's Home 2" and "Murder on the Orient Express." Also opening in limited release is "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."
