Indonesia: Appeal against the re-election of Joko Widodo
Prabowo Subianto's lawyers, who are contesting his defeat in the 17 April presidential election in Indonesia, seized the Constitutional Court on Friday night, denouncing fraud.
The incumbent president, Joko Widodo, was declared the winner of the vote with 55.5% of the votes against 44.5% for the reserve general. The opposition maintains that the results announced Tuesday by the General Electoral Commission (KPU) are fraught with fraud.
Demonstrations followed the announcement of the results in Jakarta and degenerated into clashes with the police. Two nights of riots in the capital have left eight dead, including three teenagers, and more than 900 wounded, according to the governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, and the health authorities of the city, where calm returned Thursday.
A first hearing is scheduled for June 14. The Constitutional Court will deliver its verdict on June 28, said the spokesman of the Supreme Court.
In 2014 already, during the previous presidential election, Prabowo, beaten by Widodo with a smaller gap, had seized justice. His complaint was rejected.
