Invoice Clinton's Choice As Keynote Speaker At Ripple’s Swell Convention Prompts Head Scratching

The previous president does not have a lot to do with cryptocurrency. Not that it issues.

On July 31, the blockchain platform Ripple introduced that Invoice Clinton would be the keynote speaker for its upcoming Swell convention.

The Swell convention, to be held in San Francisco October 1-2, will join "the world's main consultants on coverage, funds, and expertise for essentially the most provocative dialog in world funds at the moment," in keeping with its web site.

To many on Twitter, selecting Clinton because the keynote speaker at a conference devoted to rising expertise appeared like an odd transfer. Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin was merely confused.

In keeping with Ripple's announcement, Clinton was chosen due to his contributions to the expansion and mass adoption of the web, which helped form the net we all know at the moment, in addition to his efforts to bridge the digital divide by placing computer systems in underserved communities' colleges and libraries.

Despite the fact that Clinton's tenure as president was marked by technological advances, Ripple's alternative to call him keynote speaker remains to be perplexing. The tech that will likely be mentioned at Swell is, clearly, years forward of something Clinton handled within the mid- to late-90s. Apart from a picture of enterprise capitalist and tech entrepreneur Matthew Roszak reportedly gifting bitcoin to the previous president, there's scarce proof that Clinton has had something to do with cryptocurrencies.

Ripple has been using lots of large names to endorse its embattled XRP token in the previous couple of months. Ashton Kutcher donated $four million value of XRP to the Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund on her tv present. Calvin Broadus – higher often known as the rapper Snoop Dogg – carried out at an afterparty for the Ripple-sponsored Consensus 2018 event. Ripple has even partnered with Madonna, agreeing to match donations to her charity that helps impoverished children in the country of Malawi.

But what does endorsement from these particular celebrities say about Ripple's target audience? Kutcher is best known for playing dumb. Snoop Dogg is a rapper. And Madonna is the "Material Girl." They all have limited connections to cryptocurrency, so if it's a bid for legitimacy, it's a strange one.

Perhaps the most reasonable explanation is that they are trying to attract those who aren't so well-versed in the new technology. And getting a former president to speak, well, that garners a lot of attention from people who wouldn't otherwise know what XRP is. For better or worse.
