The soldier Vitaly Shakun was managing a bridge in Kherson when the Russian soldiers moved towards the area and mined the bridge. Later, Shakun realized the only way to stop the Russian troops was to blow up the bridges.



The soldier immediately contacted his battalion and carried out his way to the mission by exploding the bridge, sacrificing his own life in the process. Shakun’s heroic act was successful in slowing down the Russian troops and allowed his comrades to regroup for a strategized defense action against his opponents.

The Soldier Vitaly Shakun is being remembered as a war hero for his sacrifice. Vitaly was a marine soldier and part of the Ukrainian army who just presently sacrificed his own life while fighting for his country during the invasion of Russia in Ukraine.



Vitaly Shakun was 25 years of age and he was born in Henichesk, Kherson district of Ukraine. He was born in 1996 on the 19th of August. He was a graduate of Lviv’s Higher Vocational School. He took a vocational course in welding. His mother was a teacher and her name is not known.



On the 24th of February in the year 2022, the soldier immediately realized the only way to not stop their enemy was to blow up the bridge manually.



Shortly after some time, he informed his comrades about all his plans. He did not have much time to escape and decided to blow himself up along with the mined bridge to prevent the Russian troops.



His heroic story of sacrifice was later uploaded on Facebook by the General Staff in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The uploaded post mentioned that Shakun was among the separate battalions of marines who met one of the first enemies in the Ukrainian army in the Crimean Isthmus. The area has been defined as “one of the hardest places on the map of Ukraine” at the present moment.
