Andrew Lincoln to Exit 'The Walking Dead' With Season 9

Andrew Lincoln is reportedly leaving "The Walking Dead," according to a report from Collider.
Lincoln stars as Sheriff Rick Grimes, the stalwart leader of a band of survivors in the post-apocalyptic AMC series. The show began when Rick was shot by a suspect, fell into a coma, and awoke in an abandoned hospital to discover the world had ended. Soon, Rick was reunited with his wife, son, and best friend, along with a group they had cobbled together during the evacuation of Atlanta.
Without delving into spoilers, season eight was particularly difficult for Rick, and granted Lincoln the opportunity to show his acting prowess in new ways. The season ended with Rick pitted against another long-time character, Maggie, played by Lauren Cohan.
Cohan found herself at the center of a contract dispute last year, as she held out for equal pay among her male co-stars. It seemed she won, and re-signed for the ninth season. But with her new ABC show, "Whiskey Cavalier," being ordered to series, her future at "TWD" is unclear. Collider, however, says that both Maggie and Rick will only appear in a handful of episodes next season. Whether it will also be Cohan's last season remains to be seen.
Also unclear is exactly how Lincoln will leave the show. Will Rick Grimes meet a brutal end? Will he finally succumb to the tragedies that have followed him for years? Or will he simply wander away for some much needed alone time? We only have to wait five months or so to find out.
Andrew Lincoln was introduced to American audiences in the ensemble romantic comedy "Love, Actually." Since joining TWD, he has appeared in a handful of specials. But TWD has largely been his only job since 2010. Cohan, meanwhile, joined the series in the second season, and has appeared in a few films along the way.
Season 9 will start sometime this fall. AMC has not confirmed yet whether the show will continue beyond the upcoming season.
