ABC Cancels 'Roseanne' After Star's Comments

Just a few short weeks ago, Roseanne Barr was back on top of the world. Her reboot of "Roseanne" was a big hit. The President of the United States was (incorrectly) proclaiming her to be a beacon of true Americans. Everything was coming up Milhouse. Despite being outspoken and sometimes even offensive in her comments, Barr was a television icon again, albeit a divisive one. Then, she had to open her mouth, or, in the parlance of our time, she had to Tweet. One abhorrent and hateful session later, and she's out of a job, along with the rest of her cast.

As Variety is reporting, ABC and Disney have taken "Roseanne" off the air. This comes in the wake of Barr making a hateful and racist comment about a former President Barack Obama aide. That went down on Tuesday morning, and a few short hours later, she was out of a job. The network was certainly thrilled to have her show be a hit, but the bad clearly outweighed the good here. The companies won't stand for this sort of nonsense, and rightly so.

ABC has pulled the plug on the revival “Roseanne.”

The move comes after series star Roseanne Barr made a comment on Twitter Tuesday morning referring to former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett as the offspring of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.” Jarrett, an African-American, was born in Iran to American parents.

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement.

Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger voiced his support for the cancellation, tweeting “There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing.”

Barr deleted her tweet about Jarrett not long after posting it. She followed it up with an apology which read, “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste. I am now leaving Twitter.”

Barr should have known better, plain and simple. Feel bad for her cast and crew, including John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, and others, but don't feel bad for Barr. She made this bed. Now, she gets to lay in it.
