"Boy Erased" is still a few months from hitting theaters, but Focus Features revealed the first looks at the film.

The film stars Lucas Hedges as a teenager named Jared whose religious parents force him to enter a gay conversion program. It is based on the 2016 memoir by Garrard Conley.

Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe star as Jared's parents. Director Joel Edgerton also appears in the film as the family's pastor.

Hedges commanded attention for his Oscar-nominated performance in "Manchester by the Sea" two years ago. He got his start in "Dan in Real Life" in 2007. It would be a few years before he appeared in another film, this time Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom." He followed "Manchester" with appearances in two of last year's Best Picture nominated films: "Lady Bird" and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."

Nicole Kidman has four Academy Award nominations, with a win for "The Hours" in 2002. Her most recent invitation to the Oscars came for her supporting role in "Lion" in 2016. She currently stars on the hit HBO series "Big Little Lies," in a role that earned her both a Golden Globe and an Emmy.

Russell Crowe is also an Oscar winner. He was nominated for the 1999 film, "The Insider," and won the following year for "Gladiator." He was nominated for a third year in a row with his work in the Best Picture winner "A Beautiful Mind." Since those days, he has starred in "Master and Commander," "Cinderella Man," and "Les Miserables." Last year, he joined Universal's doomed Dark Universe in "The Mummy."

Joel Edgerton has starred in films including "Ned Kelly," "Kinky Boots," and "The Great Gatsby." He made his feature directorial debut with "The Gift" in 2015. He also starred in that film. This is his second time in the director's chair for a feature film. "The Gift" earned a lot of critical praise, so expectations are running high on this follow up.

Focus Features is distributing the film. It will be in theaters on September 28.
