Cannes 2018: 'Under the Silver Lake' Reactions Range from Love to Hate

David Robert Mitchell's neo-noir "Under the Silver Lake" premiered at Cannes on Wednesday to mixed reactions.

The film stars Andrew Garfield as Sam, a young man who becomes obsessed with the disappearance of his neighbor. She is played by Riley Keough. The film also stars Topher Grace, Sydney Sweeney, Jimmi Simpson, and Grace Van Patten.

Garfield recently earned his first Oscar nomination for "Hacksaw Ridge," which was also nominated for Best Picture. His breakout role came with "The Social Network" in 2010. He followed that with taking up the mantle of Peter Parker in "The Amazing Spider-Man" films. He also starred in "99 Homes," "Silence," and is coming off of an acclaimed Broadway performance of "Angels in America."

Riley Keough has had a busy couple of years. After appearing in films like "Magic Mike" and "Mad Max: Fury Road," she starred in "American Honey" and hasn't looked back. She went on to "It Comes at Night" and "Logan Lucky" last summer, and had two films premiering at Cannes this year. This film, and the highly controversial Lars Von Trier film, "The House That Jack Built."

Mitchell wrote and directed the film. It is his third feature, following "The Myth of the American Sleepover," and "It Follows." The latter was something of a surprise, earning generally enthusiastic reviews.

"Under the Silver Lake" is distributed by A24 and will hit theaters on June 22.
