Academy Award nominee and Emmy winner John Lithgow is the newest addition to the cast of Paramount's "Pet Sematary" remake.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Lithgow will play the kind neighbor Jud Crandall.

The film is a new adaptation of Stephen King's 1983 novel of the same name. The book was adapted into a movie in 1989. It is the story of a young family who moves to a small town in Maine. In the aftermath of a tragedy, they unwittingly awaken a terrifying force.

Lithgow takes on the role, Jud Crandall originally played by Fred Gwynne. It was previously announced that Jason Clarke will play Louis Creed, the young patriarch who becomes friends with the lonely old man.

While praised at the time for featuring one of the creepiest performances of a child actor, the original film hasn't exactly aged well. And with the success of last year's "IT" at Warner Bros, it's no wonder Paramount is keen to update one of King's scarier tales.

Adding Lithgow to the cast solidifies that the project is moving forward. His two Academy Award nominations came back to back in the early 80s. First came "The World According to Garp," followed by "Terms of Endearment" in 1983. That film went on to win five Oscars, one of which went to Lithgow's co-star and competitor: Jack Nicholson. Lithgow continued to star in films, but also moved into television. He earned nominations and wins for "Third Rock from the Sun" and "The Crown." He also won big for his chilling performance as the Trinity Killer in the fourth season of "Dexter."

Additional casting announcements will be forthcoming. Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer ("Scream" TV series) are directing. David Kajganich, Matt Greenberg, and Jeff Buhler have all worked on the script.

The film is currently slated for release on April 19, 2019.
