WATCH: Brigitte Fossey and Larry Cech Star in Oscar Contender 'Absinthe'

Any day now, the Oscar shortlist for Best Live Action Short Film will be announced. And one contender to look out for is Michelle Figlarz's "Absinthe." The story follows an American man named Simon (played by Larry Cech) who has lost his way in life. On a trip to France, however, he receives a strange message from some famous figures, including Janis Joplin, Frida Kahlo and Marilyn Monroe. Soon enough, we meet these icons in a Parisian bar.

Another major character in the film is a living legend in her own right. Simon's grandmother is played by Brigitte Fossey, a casting opportunity that came about after Cech and Fossey met in Cannes. They were walking together one day and she joked, "it would be funny if I could be your mother one day in a film." Cech took the proposition seriously and before long, they were meeting with the director Michelle Figlarz.

The result of this collaboration is "Absinthe," an enchanting film reminiscent of Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris." As you can imagine from its title, however, this encounter with the past has a slightly more esoteric feel. But its appealing black and white cinematography and excellent production design also bring a vintage touch of class. And with esteemed French actresses like Marie-Christine Barrault and Fossey gracing the screen, the allure is undeniable.
