The female journalist who changed the face of journalism and psychology by risking her life in the name of justice will be getting her due on the small screen. Lifetime has greenlit "Nellie Bly," a television film set to star Christina Ricci ("Monster"), Judith Light ("Transparent") and Josh Bowman ("Revenge") according to Deadline.

Nellie Bly.

Nellie Bly was a 19th century journalist who wanted to investigate claims of patient abuse in the nearby Women's Lunatic Asylum, which was known for its squalid conditions and rather horrifying atmosphere. In order to get an accurate account, Bly pretended to be mentally ill and had herself admitted to the asylum.

While it was relatively easy for Bly to enter the hospital, she found it almost impossible to leave, as the doctors and nurses believed she was crazy, even after she dropped her act. She was imprisoned in the asylum for ten days before her news editor broke her out. Her exposé on the conditions in the asylum rocked the world, leading to a closer look at the Women's Lunatic Asylum, increased funds for New York's hospitals and inspired a general shift in how the mentally ill were treated. The article was later expanded into a book called "10 Days in a Madhouse."

"Nellie Bly" will take a sinister direction, with a screenplay from Helen Childress ("Reality Bites"). Ricci is set to play Bly, with Light playing head nurse Matron Grady who tortures Bly to the brink of sanity. Bowman will play Dr. Josiah, a doctor who tries to help Bly but just makes everything worse.

Karen Moncrieff ("The Keeping Hours") is set to direct, with Ricci pulling double duty as an executive producer via Grey Team Productions. Howard Braunstein ("The Client List") from the Howard Braunstein Company, Michael Tive, David Sigal ("Crashing the Party"), Peter Werner ("Grimm") and Jonathan Baruch ("Stitchers") will also executive produce. "Nellie Bly" is the third Lifetime film Ricci will star in, previously appearing in the critically acclaimed "Lizzie Borden Chronicles" and "Lizzie Borden Took An Axe."

"Nellie Bly" is currently in production and will bow on Lifetime in 2018.
