WWII Spy Vera Atkins to Get Biopic from Sarah Megan Thomas, Lydia Dean Pilcher

The story of the real life Jane Bond and her band of secret agents will finally be told. Vera Atkins, the female WWII spy who recruited, trained, and supervised Britain's SOE spies will be the subject of a new biopic from Sarah Megan Thomas ("Equity") and Lydia Dean Pilcher ("The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks"). Thomas has already written the screenplay, with Pilcher attached to direct.
Atkins was a spy recruiter for Winston Churchill's "secret army," the Special Operations Executive, during WWII. The disabled Indian American pacifist WAAF pilot turned spy was a brilliant leader, recruiting two of the SOE's first female spies and was responsible for training and supervising 37 British spies who parachuted into Nazi-occupied France to sabotage the Reich. Atkins formed a close bond with her female recruits and vehemently searched for twelve of her agents who went missing during the op. According to THR, she also inspired the James Bond character, Miss Moneypenny.
It's high time for Atkins' story to be told, and the project is in good hands. The project will be Pilcher's second time in the director's chair, having previously helmed "Radium Girls" and produced a plethora of Hollywood hits, including "The Darjeeling Limited," "The Talented Mr. Ripley," "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" and Disney's "Queen of Katwe." Thomas also has an impressive CV, creating, producing and starring in "Equity" alongside Anna Gunn ("Breaking Bad"), Alysia Reiner ("Orange is the New Black") and James Purefoy ("The Following").
The pair released a statement on their new project, with Pilcher noting, "In a time of surging nationalism, this character driven, untold story, explores how different national and cultural forces working together can stimulate a deeper understanding of society as a whole.” Thomas added that Pilcher is "the perfect director for this spy drama featuring an international cast of women uniting to resist."
Casting is currently underway, with the writing and directing duo planning to begin production next spring. Thomas is repped by Leigh Brillstein Management, Bresler Kelly and CAA.
