The Red Lady has come to Tokyo. "Game of Thrones" actor Carice van Houten has joined the cast of William Olsson's film adaptation "I Am Not A Bird" alongside Alexandro Daddario ("True Detective"), Andrew Rothney ("The Huntsman: Winter's War"), Kate Easton ("Ocean's Eight"), Takehiro Hira (Nobu's Castle) and newcomer Elisabeth Larena ("Cuentame"). Production began today in Tokyo, Japan on the film, an adaptation of Catherine Hanrahan's "Lost Girls And Love Hotels," which she adapted for the screen.
"I Am Not A Bird" follows Margaret (Daddario), a young westerner who loses herself in nighttime Tokyo, struggling to cope with memories of her twin brother's descent into insanity. According to Deadline, Margaret falls in with a group of fellow ex-pats and finds love with Japanese gangster Kazu. But will a killer walking the streets of Tokyo derail Margaret's journey to find herself? Van Houten will play Ines, a friend of Margaret's who's aged out of a youthful modeling career and the party lifestyle, and now wishes to return home.
Van Houten is best known for her role as Melisandre on HBO's "Game of Thrones," and also appears in the upcoming film "Domino" alongside Guy Pearce ("When We Rise") and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ("Game of Thrones"). Rothney and Easton portray friends Liam and Louise, with Larena's role not yet publicized. Hira, an established Japanese film star, will play the dashing Kazu.
"I Am Not A Bird" is helmed by Swedish director Olsson, who won the Grand Jury Prize, Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay awards at the 2013 Shanghai Film Festival for his Swedish-language film "Reliance" (Förtroligheten). Lauren Mann of Wandering Trail Pictures and Lawrence Inglee of Blackbird will produce, with WME Global's Alexis Garcia and Samantha Rancanelli handling the film's worldwide rights.
No word yet on when "I Am Not A Bird" will hit theaters.
