'Quantum Leap' May Have New Life as Feature Film

The cult, time-traveling show "Quantum Leap" may soon be headed to a theater near you. According to Entertainment Weekly, show creator Donald P. Bellisario told a crowd at LA Comic Con that he has written a script for a feature film.
"Quantum Leap" ran from 1989-1993, garnering a number of Primetime Emmy nominations and wins. The series followed the adventures of Dr. Samuel Beckett, a quantum physicist who discovered a method of time traveling. During a test of his machine, Dr. Beckett accidentally traveled into the past, and spent the four seasons "leaping" from one situation to another, switching places with someone. He soon figured out that the way to move on was to fix something that had gone wrong in each person's life. In each leap, Sam took on the appearance of the person he had replaced. His only help came from his friend Al, who was able to use the machine to appear as a hologram that only Sam could see and hear.
The series starred Scott Bakula in the lead role, and Dean Stockwell as Al. Each won a Golden Globe in different seasons for their performances, Bakula for Lead Actor and Stockwell for Supporting. The series was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series for three out of five seasons.
NBC faced a lot of backlash from fans when "Quantum Leap" was canceled in 1993. The final episode left Sam with a choice to return to his life in the future (then sometime around 1999), or to continue on his path of righting wrongs. The episode concluded with Sam choosing to carry on. However, Bellisario has long maintained that this ending was chosen because of assurances from the network that the series would be renewed for a sixth season.
But Bellisario also remains faithful to the episode that ended up being the finale. He told the crowd, "I was proud of that episode. Everybody was."
He refused to reveal any details about the plot of the film. And it has a long way to go before production can begin. But longtime fans of the series now have something new to hope for.
