'Murphy Brown' Star Jay Thomas Passes Away at 69

"Cheers" and "Ray Donovan" actor Jay Thomas has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 69.
His longtime agent and friend, Don Buchwald, confirmed Thomas' death to the NY Daily News, saying, "Jay was one of a kind, never at a loss for words and filled with so much fun and wonderfully whacky thoughts and behavior." He went on to note the actor's love for his wife and sons, saying they were "the true passion of his life."
Thomas was known for his comedic acting on "Murphy Brown" as Jerry Gold from 1989-1998, along with numerous beloved guest spots on hit TV shows. He played bartender Carla's wayward husband on "Cheers" before his character died after a run-in with a Zamboni. He also guested on "Mork & Mindy," where he was known to riff off of comedian Robin Williams ("Dead Poet's Society"). Thomas was still acting just before his death on "Ray Donovan," playing Marty Grossman, and hosted his own radio show on SiriusXM.
As Rolling Stone notes, fans of Thomas will also remember the actor for his famous yearly schtick on "The Late Show With David Letterman," appearing to tell his story about a run-in with "Lone Ranger" Clayton Moore. He returned to tell the story from 1998 up until Letterman retired in 2014. Watch a video of his story below.
Thomas is survived by his wife Sally and three sons, Sam, Jake and J.T.
