Will Ferrell to Produce and Star in 'The 100-Year Old Man'

Will Ferrell ("Saturday Night Live") is set to produce and star in an American film adaptation of Jonas Jonasson's critically acclaimed book "The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared." The novel, which was released in 2012, sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The film's script is set to be written by Jason George of "Narcos" fame, but the film hasn't landed a director just yet.
Ferrell will portray Allan, an elderly man who goes rogue and escapes his retirement home on his 100th birthday. As the story unfolds, we learn that Allan has lived an extraordinary life, and was an eyewitness to several of the biggest events of the 20th century. In a previous film adaptation, Allan met President Harry S. Truman and Robert Oppenheimer, among others. The "SNL" comedian has a blessing of author Jonasson, who told Variety:
My character, Allan, knows the art of being funny just by being. That is something Will Ferrell masters to perfection. Great humor with small measurements. I am happy that Allan is now in his hands.
"The 100 Year-Old Man" was previously adapted in Sweden back in 2013, garnering an Academy Award nom for best makeup and hair. It raked in the dough at the box office ($50 million), becoming the third-highest grossing Swedish flick of all time.
But according to Empire, the film will not merely translate the Swedish adaptation for an American audience, as the new film will harken back to Jonasson's original book. Instead of President Truman and Oppenheimer, the American adaptation will pick other memories from the original novel.
Ferrell will produce alongside partners Adam McKay and Jessica Elbaum under their Gary Sanchez banner. Andy Licht and NiceFLX Pictures' Pontus Edgren and Mikael Wallen will also produce. Felix Herngren and Henrik Jansson-Schweizer will executive produce, and Joshua Mehr will co-produce.
