WATCH: Trailer for Netflix's Documentary 'Resurface' Premieres
von Clayton Davis
Netflix's latest documentary showcases a unique treatment for war veterans struggling with PTSD. "Resurface" is directed by Joshua Izenberg ("Slomo," "Blue Market") and Wynn Padula ("Slomo," "Rainbow Klansmen") and has already garnered critical praise, winning the Special Jury Prize at 2017's Sundance Film Festival.
"Resurface" follows a group of veterans who use surf therapy via "Operation Surf" and the "Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation" to help cope with the effects of post-traumatic stress and life back in the States. The trailer focuses on the ability of surfing to help give veterans a way "to describe themselves with a new story." "Surf is medicine," and in veteran Bobby Lane's case, it even saves lives. The documentary also calls attention to bleak trauma statistics for US combat troops, of which 1 in 3 are diagnosed with PTSD but less than 40% seek help.
Izenberg, a surfer himself, told Psychology Today there are multiple benefits to surf therapy for those struggling with PTSD, including a demand for complete focus, which makes the surfer stay present in the moment, and an adrenaline rush that mimics the rush veterans were used to in combat, but doesn't appear in civilian life. The act of surfing also tires out the body, helping veterans with PTSD-induced insomnia finally get some shut-eye.
Along with the Sundance accolade, "Resurface" was a Doclands official selection, a Golden Gate Award winner at the San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival, and an Audience Award winner at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival this year, according to the documentary's official website.
“Resurface” premieres Sept. 1 on Netflix. Watch the official trailer below.
