Salvador: New President Nayib Bukele takes office

The new Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele, took office Saturday with the ambition to transform this small country of Central America, where poverty and violence push the population to emigrate en masse to the United States.
Mr. Bukele, 37, former mayor of San Salvador, was inaugurated in a special session of Parliament attended by delegations from 83 countries.
"Our country is like a sick child, and we must all take care of it," he told the crowd in his inaugural speech.
The sixth Salvadoran president since the end in 1992 of the civil war that had bloodied the country for a dozen years, has given itself the mission to break with the double curse of violence of criminal gangs and misery.
