It was in the autumn of his life that Rouhollah Khomeini took the lead in the Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979, disrupting the political and religious landscape of the Middle East.
The ayatollah, with a dark look under the black turban and browbone wrinkles, spent fifteen years in exile before becoming the guide of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a country where Shiism is a state religion since XVIth century.
Forty years later, the Iranian revolution continues to exacerbate in the Muslim world the rivalry between the two major branches of Islam: Shiism and Sunnism.
