Indonesia: the questions that arise after the Felix Dorfin conviction

The Frenchman Felix Dorfin was sentenced to death for drug trafficking. Indonesia is known for its extreme severity on the issue of narcotics. All, however, is not over for the convict.
Indonesian justice on Monday (May 20th) sentenced a French national, Felix Dorfin, to death for drug trafficking. He was arrested last September at the Lombok Island International Airport, near Bali, with nearly 4 kg of drugs. France, through the voice of the Quai d'Orsay, expressed concern about this conviction.
Why does Indonesia have such restrictive legislation on drugs?
Like all countries in the Asian region, Indonesia has adopted extremely harsh drug legislation. Punishments may go as far as death for acts which, in the West, would only result in low sentences, since the judges consider them to be trafficking. In their severity, the local magistrates do not hesitate to go beyond the requisitions.........
