Sudan military council: Sharia must remain source of legislation

The military council in Sudan said on Tuesday that Islamic law (sharia) should remain the source of the legislation, blaming the civil leaders of the protest for failing to mention it in their proposals over a period of transition.

Last week, the leaders of the protesters handed over to the ten members of the Military Council proposals on the form of the institutions they want for the transition period.

In a press conference in Khartoum, the spokesman of the Military Council, General Chamseddine Kabbachi, said that his organization agreed with most of these proposals but that he had "a lot of reservations" about others.

He cited in particular the lack of reference to sharia law, which was the source of legislation under deposed President Omar al-Bashir.......
