Poland: the Poles are fighting for their rights

In this issue of Insiders "Europe off the beaten track", we are interested in civil rights in Poland, in full rise of nationalism and anti-immigrant sentiment in the European Union. Our reporter, Damon Embling, went to Gdansk, a liberal-minded city in a predominantly Catholic and conservative country.

Places like Gdansk are rare. This port city on the edge of the Baltic is against the establishment and is widely regarded as a "liberal enclave". This liberal approach, Gdansk owes much to Pawel Adamowicz.

Mayor of the city for more than 20 years, he supported diversity and worked for a policy that recognized everyone, including migrants and the LGBT community. Last January, Pawel Adamowicz was stabbed to death.

Thousands of people took to the streets to demand the liberalization of the right to abortion. The Polish law on abortion is one of the most restrictive in Europe.

So when we question this priest about the prospect of a recognition of same-sex relationships, Pawel Kowalski kicks into touch.........
