The multimillionaire financier had been jailed on accusations of sex trafficking dozens of underage girls.

he body of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was found in his Manhattan jail cell Saturday morning. According to The New York Times, the multi-millionaire financier died by suicide.

After his arrest on federal sex trafficking charges, Epstein was found unconscious in his cell on July 23rd, in what authorities called a potential suicide attempt. He was placed on suicide watch after that incident. Epstein had been previously convicted of sex crimes in 2008, after striking a controversial plea deal that found him serving just 13 months in prison.

Epstein’s death came just hours after newly unsealed court documents revealed further allegations of sexual abuse against the former hedge fund manager and some of his powerful associates. In the documents, staffers at Epstein’s Palm Beach home shared accounts of a revolving door of young women and girls who visited the house ostensibly to give massages to Epstein. Virginia Giuffre, who alleges that Epstein began sexually assaulting her when she was just 16 years old, said that “massage” became a code word the financier and his girlfriend Ghislane Maxwell used for sex.

Giuffre alleges that Epstein and Maxwell forced her to have sex with their friends, including lawyer Alan Dershowitz, and Prince Andrew, Duke of York, the second son of Queen Elizabeth. "I wasn’t chained to a sink—but they had an invisible chain for me. I know had power," Giuffre told The New Yorker. "He was constantly telling me, ‘I own the police department—I have friends that owe me favors.’"
