"Takashi Murakami: Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow" includes 18 works by the artist, as well as immersive installations developed jointly between the artist and his studio, Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. Among the most important works in the exhibition are two of the artist's monumental paintings, "100 Arhats" (2013) and the exhibition's title work, "In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow" (2014), nearly 82-feet wide.
“Takashi Murakami’s work (…) reflects within its complex iconography a response to times of crisis and uncertainty, whether connected to postwar Japan or the Fukushima nuclear disaster. By re-visiting some of his most beloved and well-known works, contextualized within onsite environments developed for The Broad, the logic of Murakami’s work in Takashi Murakami: Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow offers an inspiring sense of continuity and history, and beauty during times of trouble”, said Joanne Heyler, Founding Director of The Broad.
In addition, Murakami's exhibition coincides with the publication of a catalogue that surveys the artist's work and career through The Broad's collection and the major loans in the exhibition. The catalogue includes a conversation between Murakami and Ed Schad in which they discuss how to create art in times of crisis, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic or the great Japanese earthquake and tsunami of 2011.
At the same time as "Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow", The Broad Museum is presenting "This Is Not America’s Flag", an exhibition that shows how various artists have explored the meaning of the American flag today. In addition, since May 11th Murakami is the subject of an exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in New York, entitled "An Arrow through History".
