You can use transferable skills such as hands-on abilities when landing a new job. But in the modern jobs market, there are soft core skills that most employers find more desirable. If you cost an employer less money, then you begin an interview with a massive advantage.

For modern jobs, you need to be excellent with communication. From the shop floor to the executive lounge, knowing how to speak to others at all levels is a huge advantage. For example, diesel mechanic jobs require excellent knowledge of problems and solutions concerning vehicles. But your CEO may not necessarily be well-versed in how cars work. So you must be able to express what you need to at different levels of professional understanding.

Management and seniors love employees that can analyze a situation and provide quick short-term solutions to long-term problems. Leadership and management often come with experience. Yet there are some that have a natural talent for communication. If your new employer doesn't have to pay money to train you in these, you are already in a favorable position. So always highlight this in your resume if you have experience.
