William Franklin, the final colonial governor of New Jersey, signs the charter of Queen's College on this day in 1766. The college would later become Rutgers University.
The United States Marine Corps was founded on this day in 1775. It was founded inside Philadelphia's Tun Tavern by Samuel Nicholas.
The only instance of a municipal government being overthrown in U.S. history would take place on this day in 1898. It would take place as part of an insurrection in Wilmington, N.C. As a result, between 14 and 300 black residents were slain, plus the displacement of 2,000 blacks and the banishment of about 20 Fusionists from the community. The town's newspaper, The Daily Record, was also lit on fire and gutted as a result.
