Mt. Olive businessman killed in accident south of Irving

IRVING (Heartland Newsfeed) -- The Montgomery County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call at 6:46 p.m. on Saturday, June 15 at the intersection of Coffeen Road and North 9th Avenue with two vehicles involved. A caller reported three adults and one child involved in the accident with an Ameren power pole also struck and damaged. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene at 6:58 p.m.
A preliminary accident report revealed that Matthew M. Schwab, 42, of Mt. Olive was traveling eastbound in a 2012 Kia Solon along 9th Avenue. 20-year-old Mitchell L. Durbin on Nokomis was traveling northbound on Coffeen Road in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am with two passengers, 19-year-old Cortney Gray of Greenville and a juvenile.
Statements obtained at the scene stated that Schwab did not stop at the intersection, with Durbin unable to avoid the collision. Both vehicles, as a result, struck a power pole owned by Ameren Illinois and came to rest in a nearby field.
Schwab and Gray were transported by ARCH to a Springfield hospital, while Durbin and the juvenile were transported by local emergency personnel for treatment at Hillsboro Area Hospital with assistance from the Coffeen and Hillsboro fire departments.
Schwab was pronounced deceased at 9:24 p.m. that evening at St. John's Hospital related to injuries sustained from the accident.
The accident investigation was completed by the sheriff's department.
