Birdsville is a small town and locality in the Shire of Diamantina, Queensland, Australia. At the 2006 census, it had a population of 115.
The town is located on land traditionally owned by the Wangkanguru People, in the Channel Country of Central West Queensland, Australia. It is 1,590 kilometres (990 mi) west of the state capital, Brisbane, and 720 kilometres (450 mi) south of the city of Mount Isa. Birdsville is on the edge of the Simpson Desert, approximately 174 km east of Poeppel Corner and the climate is very arid.


Birdsville is well-known for its dust storms, the scorching heat in summer, and its loneliness. Its also famous for its iconic horse races and the world's most remote music festival.

The Birdsville Hotel

The Birdsville Races
The Birdsville Races are horse races held each year in September. Funds are raised in aid of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. The population is swelled from about 100 to around 7,000 people for the two-day event. The first races were run in the town in 1882.

Dubbed as the Melbourne Cup of the Outback, crowds of 6,000 to 7,000 racegoers converge on the town each year to enjoy two day of quality outback racing and entertainment. The second race meet in the Simpson Desert Racing Carnival, the 13 race program features horses from all over Australia competing for the coveted Birdsville Cup.

Other entertainment includes the Fashions on the Field, Fred Brophy's Boxing Troupe, Equine Fun Day at the Hotel, Fun Run, Cocktail Party, a variety of food vendors, a giant auction and much more.

The Big Red Bash
The Big Red Bash at Birdsville is the world’s most remote music festival and is now in it's sixth year.  It is usually held in October, runs for three days and attracts visitors from all over Australia.

This is a bucket-list event with some of the biggest names in Australian music to perform in the desert at the iconic Big Red sand hill.
