The largest art museum in the Nordic region opens in Oslo

The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, with a collection of more than 400,000 works of art, opens its doors on 11 June 2022.

Designed by Klaus Schuwerk (Kleihues + Schuwerk), the new museum has 54,600 m2 of floor space, including 13,000 m2 of exhibition area, displaying some 6,500 works selected from a collection of nearly half a million works of art.
The Museum includes the works of art exhibited until recently at the National Gallery of Norway, including possibly the country's most famous painting, the first version of Edvard Munch's "The Scream", as well as works by European masters such as Lucas Cranach, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. Also included are the collections of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, closed in September 2017; and the Art Industry Museum, closed in October 2016.
From the opening day until 11 September, the museum is presenting its first exhibitions. The first of these, entitled "I call it art", includes works by 147 contemporary Norwegian artists, exploring "notions of identity, nationality and democracy", and questioning "the boundaries between those who are included and excluded from the art world and society." "East of the Sun, West of the Moon", on view until 30 December, shows a collection of drawings made for Norwegian fairy tales almost 150 years ago, offering "a rare chance to see the fragile original drawings of trolls, and other fairy tale characters created for the first illustrated children’s books in Norway by artists Erik Werenskiold and Theodor Kittelsen."
Also from 11 June, the museum exhibits the Fredriksen Family Collection, consisting of artworks assembled in memory of Inger Astrup Fredriksen, and including international art from the last 90 years.
