"Suzan Frecon: Recent Paintings, Oil and Water" is the eighth solo exhibition of American artist Suzan Frecon (b.1941) at David Zwirner Gallery, although this is also the first major presentation of her paintings in London.
The gallery explains that "Frecon is known for abstract oil paintings and works on paper that —as she notes— ‘speak for themselves.’ Made over long stretches of time, her work invites the viewer’s sustained attention: these, she says, ‘are not pictures that you look at. They are paintings that you experience.’".
At the same time, David Zwirner Gallery is also presenting "Drawn to remember", an exhibition of new paintings by Indian artist Mahesh Baliga (b.1982), in what is Baliga's first solo exhibition outside India.
According to the gallery, "Baliga documents the intricacies of life in western India, instilling quotidian and often overlooked moments with emotional resonance. Fascinated by the relationship between a painting’s formal construction and its psychological effect, the artist slips seamlessly between the real and the imagined, developing surreal visual interventions that convey the poignant and strange nature of memories, personal loss, and the passage of time".
Following the opening of these two exhibitions in London, David Zwirner Gallery plans to present two exhibitions in New York later this month -dedicated to the artists Óscar Murillo and Michaël Borremans- which will open on 28 April.
