Impressionist works from the Bemberg Foundation to be exhibited in San Diego

From 19 March to 7 August 2022, the San Diego Museum of Art will host a group of Impressionist works owned by the Bemberg Foundation.

In 1994, the Argentinian-born collector Georges Bemberg (1915-2011) donated his immense art collection over a period of 99 years to the Foundation that bears his name so that it could be exhibited to the public at the Hôtel d'Assézat in Toulouse, France. The Foundation's 1,100 works include many of the great masters of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Now, a selection of more than 60 of these works are on view at the San Diego Museum of Art in an exhibition entitled "Monet to Matisse: Impressionist Masterpieces from the Bemberg Foundation".
As is customary in many exhibitions devoted to Impressionism, "Monet to Matisse" includes works created during the zenith of the movement -such as landscapes by Alfred Sisley, perhaps the painter most faithful to Impressionism, and Claude Monet, the movement's great standard bearer- with works by artists who never belonged to the movement, such as Pierre Bonnard -represented in the exhibition with ten works, including "Le Cannet" (1930)- Paul Signac or even Pablo Picasso. "This is an extraordinary opportunity to view masters in Impressionism who completely defined the movement," declared Roxana Velásquez, CEO of the San Diego Museum of Art, an institution that had already collaborated with the Bemberg Foundation last year, when it hosted the exhibition "Cranach to Canaletto".
The San Diego Museum of Art is the second American museum to host the group of works including in "Monet to Matisse: Impressionist Masterpieces from the Bemberg Foundation", which had already been on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, from 27 June to 19 September 2021.
