The centrepiece of the exhibition is the sculptural ensemble "untitled: postscorral" (2014), a series of more than 100 brightly coloured triangular cement posts over 6 metres high, forming a circular barricade that occupies the entire space of the North Gallery at Hauser & Wirth London. The work prevents visitors to the gallery from taking their usual route through the rooms, forcing them to walk around the cement posts, which the gallery says is indicative of the artist's interest "in the absurd, frustrating, and often felicitous interactions that result from unexpectedeveryday encounters between people and their surroundings".
In addition to this large-scale work, the exhibition includes twelve works on paper by Barlow, an artist who has always attached great importance to drawing, whether in pencil, acrylic or watercolour, in the creative process of her sculptures.
About the artist: Phyllida Barlow was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1944. She studied at Chelsea College of Arts and at the Slade School of Fine Art, where she was also a teacher, her students including other notable artists such as Rachel Whiteread. She often creates works of monumental sizes, made with industrial materials. On 23 August, Hauser & Wirth Publishers published the book 'Phyllida Barlow: Collected Lectures, Writings and Interviews', which brings together 50 texts by Barlow, in which she reflects on her work and other artists.
