rethinkindia is the attempt to get a glimpse of the current entanglement of media and economy, activism and power, habits of reading and reporting in India. It can only be seen as a snap-shot from our very own and specific perspective.
In a three months research, we interviewed activists of community journalism, media profs and journalists from India and Germany in order to find out how mainstreamed imagery is created and transported via new media. We also got involved with the concept of Critical Whiteness challenging our own perspective and position of writing an reporting.
Economy and mainstream media are often strongly entangled in India causing a lack of critical coverage. Digital alternative media doesn’t seem to be able to fill in this gap – they just don’t reach their target group, the poor and rural people. Therefore, India needs a “self-made third world story”, claims Prof. Shashwati Goswami, journalist and professor for Radio and Television in Delhi.
