What’s On TV? – Friday (10/18/19) – Festival Films Invade Streaming Services

The highlights for tonight include two festival films with plenty of buzz surrounding them. One is the newest endeavor from Steven Soderbergh and the other is fascinating indie-horror, we can finally see if these two movies are worth the admiration they've already earned.
Pick of the Day:
“The Laundromat” (Netflix)Image result for the laundromat netflix
Steven Soderbergh's "The Laundromat" follows Ellen Martin (Meryl Streep), a mother who is about to go on the vacation of her dreams before she realizes something has gone terribly wrong and most of her money has disappeared. She is able to trace the source of her problems back to a tax firm located in Panama. The firm is run by Jürgen Mossack (Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Antonio Banderas), who are two ruthless lawyers consumed with greed. But the more she digs up on the film, the more Ellen finds that she is not the only person to be screwed over by these two lawyers and seeks a way to payback.
Following it's premier at the Venice Film Festival, initial reaction compared "The Laundromat" to Adam McKay's "The Big Short." Knowing McKay's film was very divisive among audiences and critics, it was not surprising to read our own J. Don Birnam review, who came out against it. All and all, "The Laundromat" looks to be another entertaining entry in Soderbergh's filmography, as well as another Oscar potential nomination for Streep.
Movies on TV:
“Wounds” (Hulu)Image result for wounds movie
Debuting at the Sundance film festival earlier this year, "Wounds" follows a bartender (Armie Hammer) and his wife (Dakota Johnson), and how their lives are turned upside down when a mysterious phone is left in their bar one night. Billed as a psychological horror drama, "Wounds" is a completely unnerving experience designed to make all who watch uncomfortable and lead to a good discussion once the credits start rolling. "Wounds" earned a mixed reception upon its premier, with a lot of critics liking it and a lot of critics disliking it, as explained by our own Karen Peterson in her review from January. Now that it is being released on Hulu, you can see which side discourse you land on and see if "Wounds" is worth all the noise is made out of Utah.
