'The Two Popes' Is a Favorite at Hamptons International Film Festival

Fernando Meirelles took the Hamptons by storm with his new film, "The Two Popes," which won the festival's coveted Audience Award. The drama about a tumultuous time in the church's recent history earned a standing ovation when it screened Saturday night in the historic Guild Hall, and was accompanied by a surprise Q&A from lead actor Jonathan Pryce.
On the documentary front, Ric Burns won the Audience Award for Documentary Feature with his film, "Oliver Sacks: His Own Life," which featured incredible end-of-life interviews with the infamous Dr. Oliver Sacks.
Drea Cooper & Zackary Canepari also leave the Hamptons with the Audience Award for Best Short Film with, "Fire in Paradise," which recounts the story of the terrible wildfires a year ago in Paradise, California.
David Nugent, HamptonsFilm Artist Director said:
We are thrilled to announce this year’s audience award winners. Filmgoers were captivated by the dynamic performances and historic moments in religious history of THE TWO POPES, the exploration of extraordinary neurologist and storyteller Oliver Sacks in OLIVER SACKS: HIS OWN LIFE, and the gripping recount of the terrifying wildfires in Butte County, California in FIRE IN PARADISE. We are proud to have screened all the films in this year’s program for our audiences out East and share such a strong slate of cinema.”
The Closing Night selection at HIFF was "Waves," from Trey Edward Schults. That film received the inaugural Zicherman Family Foundation Screenwriting Award. It is a $10,000 prize presented to "an early-career screenwriter who has demonstrated singular vision and dedication to their craft."
The jury award winners were announced yesterday at an awards celebration, and can be found here.
