Kino Lorber has released a U.S. teaser trailer for Kantemir Balagov's "Beanpole." The film world premiered at Cannes Film Festival where it competed under Un Certain Regard and won the FIPRESCI Prize and for Best Director.
In post-WWII Leningrad, two women, Iya and Masha (astonishing newcomers Viktoria Miroshnichenko and Vasilisa Perelygina), intensely bonded after fighting side by side as anti-aircraft gunners, attempt to readjust to a haunted world. As the film begins, Iya, long and slender and towering over everyone—hence the film’s title—works as a nurse in a shell-shocked hospital, presiding over traumatized soldiers. A shocking accident brings them closer and also seals their fates.
Balagov previously directed "Molodoy eschyo" and "Closeness," which also premiered at Cannes in 2017. His latest film is written by himself and Aleksandr Terekhov. It is inspired by Belarusian journalist Svetlana Alexievich’s book, “The Unwomanly Face of War,” where the author details the experiences of Soviet women living through hardships of war.
"Beanpole" had its North American debut when it premiered at Telluride Film Festival. It also screened at Toronto International Film Festival, London Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival and New York Film Festival. In his NYFF review, Award Circuit's Joey Magidson writes that the central performances are riveting and the film is much more than the tragedy that would meet the eye.
Russia selected the post-WWII film as its official selection for the Best International Feature race at the Oscars. The film is produced by Alexander Rodnyansky, who was nominated for an Oscar for Andrey Zvyangintsev’s film “Loveless” and “Leviathan."
"Beanpole" is produced by AR Content and Non Stop Productions. Kino Lorber and BTeam Pictures will distribute the film in U.S. theaters January 29, 2020.
