Jason Reitman's 'The Front Runner' Gets a Release Date

As we move closer to the second half of the year, 2018 Oscar contenders are going to start making moves. One such thing to look out for is potential Academy Award players staking out release dates. Namely, awards season release dates. Without that kind of prime real estate, it's simply harder to break through to voters. Well, one such possible title has gone and gotten itself a prime spot on the calendar. The film in question is "The Front Runner," Jason Reitman's biopic of failed Presidential candidate Gary Hart. A baity sounding movie, it now has been dated by Sony with a slot befitting that sort of title.

According to Deadline, Reitman's flick is now a November release. This would give the movie ample time to gear up on the fall festival circuit. The filmmaker is a staple at the Telluride Film Festival, so a debut there is almost a given. Sony may take it elsewhere too, especially if it has got the goods. Hugh Jackman will play Hart for Reitman, with Kaitlyn Dever, Vera Farmiga, Ari Graynor, Sara Paxton, Kevin Pollak, and J.K. Simmons among the co-stars. Reitman directs as well as co-writes here with Matt Bai and Jay Carson. This film always was an intriguing one, so this show of support from the studio is a sign that we need to pay attention to it. Biopics have been traditional Oscar bait, so in the fall we'll find out if this political one is a timely attention to that tradition. At the moment, it seems like a strong horse to bet on, awards wise.

Here's a bit from the article:

Sony has made some intriguing RSVPs on the fall calendar tonight: Jason Reitman’s Gary Hart biopic The Front Runner will open limited on Nov. 7, expand on Nov. 16 and break wide on Nov. 21, the Thanksgiving stretch.

It would come as no surprise if The Front Runner premieres during fall’s festival trifecta of Venice, Telluride and Toronto. Last year Sony premiered Roman J. Israel, Esq. at TIFF and opened the film in mid-November, initially limited then a wide expansion. The legal drama earned Denzel Washington his sixth Oscar nomination as a lead actor.

Reitman is coming off of the well reviewed "Tully" earlier this year, so 2018 could be a big one for him. Stay tuned for more on "The Front Runner" in the months to come.
