Dorcas Kasinde, Miss Congo Beauty Pageant has won the Miss Africa 2018 Beauty Pageant that took place in Calabar, the Cross River State of Nigeria. The contest that took place early Friday morning at the Calabar International Conference Centre saw Miss Kasinde beat Zambia’s Gladys Kayumba (third place) and Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnaemeka (second place) to win this years Miss Africa Beauty Pageant which is in its third edition.

The winner went home with $35,000 and a sports car. The crown was presented by Miss Gaseangwe Balopi of Botswana who was the winner of the 2017 edition of the contest.

Prof Ben Ayade, the Governor of Cross River State while thanking participants said Africa is able to tell its own story without depending on the Western media which he said is always centered on war and poverty.

”This is a celebration of African beauty, brain and heritage; the world will see what African brain and beauty is all about,” he said.

”The judges should come down and look at those things that make a woman truly African; it is not just the skin colour. Tunisians and Moroccans are light-skinned but they are Africans,” he continued.

This year’s event featured countries from French and Spanish speaking Africa. The 25 participating countries included Sierra Leone, Ghana, Cameroon, Zambia, Burundi, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tunisia, Tanzania, Botswana, Angola, Uganda, Somalia, Algeria, Togo, South Sudan, Kenya, Gambia, Namibia, Rwanda, Mozambique, Morocco and host Nigeria.

2018 Miss Africa Beauty Pageant Setbacks

The event suffered some setbacks as the non-English-speaking countries had no translators and hence contestants had to take questions in English only.

The major incident of the event ensued when the winner of the contest, Miss Kasinde’s wig caught fire. The winning beauty pageant was celebrating her victory hugging her predecessor when her wig caught fire.

The 25-year old Miss Kasinde, winner of the 2018 Miss Africa Beauty Pageant is the co-founder of Mil’arts that brings together artists of all kind in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
