The first Friday in November premiers the newest 2019 awards contender from Netflix with David Michôd's "The King." Along with a film adaption of a culturally relevant Broadway play, the popular streaming service is once again the place to pull premium content from this evening. Along with new episodes of recurring television shows and some movie favorites to watch, tonight's entertainment options are limitless.

“The King” (Netflix)
Around this time last year, Netflix gave us the historical action-drama "Outlaw King," which was a thrilling film with a strong lead performance from Chris Pine. This year, Netflix looks to repeat the formula with David Michôd's "The King," starring Timothée Chalamet, Joel Edgerton and Robert Pattinson. It follows King Henry V (Chalamet), as he must navigate becoming the king of England in the aftermath of his father's death. "The King" is a accessible adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Henry V," with the script written by Michôd and Edgerton.
Word of mouth from the fall festivals suggest "The King" could be a dark horse Oscar contender in the technical categories. Our own Joey Magidson reviewed it a couple of weeks ago, praising both Chalamet and Pattinson's performances but the film never came together for him as a whole. With an impressive supporting cast to match its talented lead, “The King” looks to follow in “Outlaw Kings” footsteps and be another solid historical epic.

“American Son” (Netflix)
Timely and profoundly personal, "American Son," has leaped from the stage to the big screen behind support of it's lead, Kerry Washington. It follows Kendra Ellis-Connor (Washington), a mother searching for answers to the murder of her African American son, who she believes was killed by the local police. Kendra is married to Scott (Steven Pasquale), who is a white man and sees the tragedy in a different light. What transpires next is a story tackling honest conversations many families have to talk about in America today. The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival to mixed reviews but led to thought provoking conversations by audiences who saw it. With it streaming now, we can all experience it and judge it for ourselves and see why Washington was so passionate in getting this story told.
