Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac is in talks to star in Paul Shrader's next feature film, a revenge thriller titled "The Card Counter."
According to a Variety exclusive, Isaac boards the Schrader project after post production on Dennis Villeneuve's "Dune" and Brian Petsos' "Big Gold Brick."
Isaac was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2014 for his lead performance in "Inside Llewyn Davis." He won the Globe in 2016 for his role in the mini-series, "Show Me A Hero." Isaac starred in Netflix's "Triple Frontier" and MGM's "The Addams Family." He can also be seen in "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" in December.

The film, written and directed by Schrader, follows William Tell (Isaac), a gambler and former serviceman who sets out to reform a young man seeking revenge on a mutual enemy from their past. Tell just wants to play cards. His spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he is approached by Cirk, a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help to execute his plan for revenge on a military colonel. Tell sees a chance at redemption through his relationship with Cirk. Gaining backing from mysterious gambling financier La Linda, Tell takes Cirk with him on the road, going from casino to casino until the unlikely trio set their sights on winning the World Series of poker in Las Vegas. But keeping Cirk on the straight-and-narrow proves impossible, dragging Tell back into the darkness of his past.
Schrader is well known in the film industry for writing the screenplays for Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull" and "The Last Temptation of Christ." He has written and directed "Affliction" and 2017's "First Reformed," which was nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay.
"The Card Counter" is being produced by Braxton Pope and Lauren Mann. William Olsson and David Wulf will serve as executive producers. Principal photography is slated to begin early next year.
