Production began this week on the new film, "The Sun Is Also a Star."

Alloy Productions, Warner Bros, and MGM are co-producing the adaptation from the book of the same name.

Here is the official synopsis:

"College-bound romantic Daniel Bae and Jamaica-born pragmatist Natasha Kingsley meet—and fall for each other—over one magical day amidst the fervor and flurry of New York City.  Sparks immediately fly between these two strangers, who might never have met had fate not given them a little push.  But will fate be enough to take these teens from star-crossed to lucky in love?  With just hours left on the clock in what looks to be her last day in the U.S., Natasha is fighting against her family’s deportation as fiercely as she’s fighting her budding feelings for Daniel, who is working just as hard to convince her they are destined to be together."

Yara Shahidi stars as Natasha and Charles Melton plays Daniel. Shahidi is eldest daughter Zoey Johnson on ABC's "Black-ish" and Freeform's "Grown-ish." Melton currently stars on the CW series, "Riverdale."

"The Sun Is Also a Star" was written by Nicola Yoon, who also wrote "Everything, Everything." That book was adapted into a film last year. Yoon's novels have graced the New York Times bestseller lists for years. "The Sun Is Also a Star" is also the recipient of many awards including: 2016 National Book Award Finalist; Amazon’s Best Book of 2016 in YA; Amazon’s Top 20 Children’s Books of 2016 in YA; the New York Times Notable Children’s Books of 2016; and Entertainment Weekly’s 10 Best Books of 2016.

Ry Russo-Young directs from a script by Tracy Oliver. Russo-Young directed "Nobody Walks" in 2012 and "Before I Fall" in 2017. She also directed an episode of the series "Cloak & Dagger" for Freeform. Oliver wrote 2016's "Barbershop: The Next Cut," and last year's big hit, "Girls Trip."
"The Sun Is Also a Star" is heading to theaters on May 17, 2019.
