Thomasin McKenzie has joined the cast of Taika Waititi's next project, the WWII film "JoJo Rabbit."

IMDb lists the film as a wartime drama about a German boy in Hitler's army who discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish boy in their home.

The article from Deadline, however, gives a much different insight into the film:

The plot follows an awkward young German boy raised by a single mother, and whose only ally is his imaginary friend Hitler. His naïve patriotism is tested when he meets a young girl who upends his worldviews, forcing him to face his biggest fears.

The film is based on the novel "Caging Skies" by Christine Leunens. It is not, however, a drama, but a satire in which Waititi, who both directs and adapted the screenplay, will play the role of Hitler. In a press release about the project, Waititi said:

“I’m stoked to begin shooting my anti-war satire. We’ve assembled an incredible cast and I couldn’t be more excited to finally ridicule Nazis and their beliefs. This film is going to piss off a lot of racists and that makes me very happy.”

McKenzie joins the cast that also includes Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, and Rebel Wilson.

Thomasin McKenzie stars in the Sundance hit, "Leave No Trace," from director Debra Granik. She is currently filming "The King" with Timothée Chalamet and Robert Pattinson. Next up will be "The True Story of the Kelly Gang" with Russell Crowe.

Waititi previously directed "What We Do in the Shadows," "Hunt for the Wilderpeople," and "Thor: Ragnarok."

"JoJo Rabbit" is in production now, and will be distributed by Fox Searchlight. There is no release date set, but it is expected sometime in 2019.
