FX Exits Marvel's Deadpool Animated TV Series With Donald Glover
von Clayton Davis
Donald Glover has been having quite the moment. Between winning awards for his television show "Atlanta" and making his mark in cinema, not to mention his music, Glover seems to be everywhere. On top of "Atlanta" for FX, he was also set to bring his unique sensibilities to a Marvel character for the channel. That character was Deadpool, who really is a perfect match for him. Everything was going swimmingly too, as last year a direct to series order was made. Well, something has come up, and this pairing of Glover and the Merc with a Mouth may well be gone with the wind.
The Hollywood Reporter details that FX and Glover will no longer be involved with this project. Marvel Television still owns the rights, so it could continue elsewhere, but this collaboration will not be happening. FX has a good track record with adult animated fare, so "Deadpool" would have been a great match. Plus, Glover is a genius. He'll undoubtedly be fine, but still, something went south here once the order for the first season was made.
Part of the statement from FX reads as follows:
"Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel's Deadpool animated series"
The network goes on to say:
"FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.”
Deadpool is too lucrative a character and property right now to let go, so we'll likely see a "Deadpool" show still. That being said, it won't be on FX and it won't be from the mind of Glover, and that's a shame. His take on the character could have been one for the ages. We still have Ryan Reynolds and the live action franchise, which is no slouch. Plus, maybe this is all for the best? Regardless, the potential for Glover with this property was just so tantalizing. For now, Marvel fans who watch FX still have "Legion" to enjoy. There just won't be "Deadpool" too. Stay tuned to see if it lands at another network.
