Magnolia Pictures released the official trailer for its upcoming film, "Ismael's Ghosts."The film premiered last year at the Cannes Film Festival. It has since been re-cut, although it isn't immediately known what has been changed.
"Ismael's Ghosts" is the story of a filmmaker, Ismael Vuillard, who still mourns the death of his wife, Carlotta, twenty years prior. As he begins to make a new film, and also finds a new love with Sylvia, Carlotta suddenly returns from the dead.
Mathieu Amalric stars as Ismael. The celebrated actor has won several César Awards in his native France. But American audiences would know him from films like "Munich," "Quantum of Solace," and "The Grand Budapest Hotel." He also starred in the four-time Academy Award nominated film, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" in 2008.
Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard stars as the presumed-dead Carlotta. Cotillard won her Oscar for her leading role in "La Vie en Rose" about iconic chanteuse Édith Piaf. She was nominated again in 2015 for her work in "Deux jours, une nuit," and has starred recently in "Assassin's Creed" and "Macbeth."
Charlotte Gainsbourg plays Syvia. The actress and singer has added her vocals to a number of film and television soundtracks. In addition, she has seven César Award nominations and two wins for "L'effrontée" in 1985 and "La bûche" in 1999. She also starred in last year's "The Snowman."
"Ismael's Ghosts" is written and directed by Arnaud Desplechin ("Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse").
It is distributed by Magnolia Pictures and will be in theaters on March 23.
