Production Begins on New Line Cinema's "Shazam!"

Production has officially begun on the next film in Warner Bros.' DC queue.
"Shazam!," a New Line Cinema film, began filming in Toronto on Monday for the story of a kid from Philly who can become his own hero. Asher Angel ("Andi Mack") plays a young foster kid named Billy Baston who can turn into adult superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi, "Chuck") with a helping hand from the Wizard (Ron Cephas Jones, "This Is Us"). A kid at heart inside a godlike body, Shazam is still figuring out his superpowers in between social studies tests and homework sessions, but soon his skills will be put to the ultimate test with a fight against the forces of evil, led by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong, "Kingsman" series).
"Shazam!" also stars Jack Dylan Grazer ("It"), Grace Fulton ("Annabelle: Creation"), Faithe Herman ("This is Us"), Ian Chen ("Fresh Off the Boat") and Jovan Armand ("Hawaii Five-O") as Billy's foster family. Cooper Andrews ("The Walking Dead") and Marta Milans ("Killer Women") play his foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez.
David F. Sandberg ("Annabelle: Creation") directs with Peter Safrans ("Aquaman") producing. Christopher Godsick, Jeffrey Chernov, Dwayne Johnson ("Central Intelligence"), Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia are executive producing. Some standouts among Sandberg's creative team include director of photography Maxime Alexandre ("Annabelle: Creation"), production designer Jennifer Spence ("Insidious"), editor Michel Aller ("Jack the Giant Slayer") and costume designer Leah Butler ("Lovelace").
The upcoming film is part of the DC universe, with Shazam first appearing in "Whiz Comics" in 1940. The superhero was originally created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck.
"Shazam!" hits theaters April 5, 2019. Warner Bros. Pictures is handling worldwide distribution.
