Art Directors Guild Awards: 'Coco' Wins Inaugural Award for Best Feature Animation
von Clayton Davis
The results are in for the annual Art Directors Guild Awards (DGA Awards), with "The Shape of Water," "Blade Runner 2049," and "Logan" earning top nods for best period, fantasy and contemporary films.
Earning the DGA's inaugural award for best animated feature was "Coco," the Disney flick about young musician Miguel who sets off on a quest in the Land of the Dead to find his great-grandfather. In a move to highlight achievements and standouts in animation, the ADG also presented the William Cameron Menzies Award to Ron Clements and John Musker, the Disney directors behind classics like "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "Moana."
The late Tyrus Wong, senior illustrator and concept artist for "Bambi," was inducted into the ADG Hall of Fame alongside late Oscar-winning production designer Sir Ken Adam ("Dr. Strangelove"). The Lifetime Achievement Award recipients were Norm Newberry, John Moffit, James J. Murakami and Martin Kline. Michael Baugh received the Outstanding Creative Achievement Award, while Kathleen Kennedy received the Cinematic Imagery Award. Kennedy noted during her acceptance speech, "cinematic imagery has to begin with great storytelling, but great storytelling can be inspired by Imagery...can we have cinematic imagery outside of the theatrical experience ? That's how we move the craft of cinema into the future."
