HBO Confirms 'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Will Debut in 2019

After months of rumors and speculation, HBO confirmed the eighth and finale season of "Game of Thrones" will premiere in 2019.
The announcement does not come as a surprise to fans, but is surely disappointing to many.
The final season will run six episodes, each expected to be close to 90 minutes in length. The season should immediately follow the conclusion of season 7, in which the Iron Throne, and all life in Westeros, is threatened by a looming evil from the North.
Series creators and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are returning for the final season. They will direct episodes, as will David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik. Both have directed past episodes of the show. Nutter helmed the devastating episode, "The Rains of Castamere," which featured the notorious Red Wedding. He won a Primetime Emmy for the season 5 finale, "Mother's Mercy." Sapochnik won a Primetime Emmy for directing "Battle of the Bastards," generally considered one of the best of the series.
The season 8 writers will be David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill. All four have written many of the shows previous episodes.
There is not an exact date yet on the return of the series. But, if it holds with previous release schedules, the final season will likely begin sometime in spring.
And while there is plenty to guess about how the series will end, one major question remains: Will George R.R. Martin publish the next novel before the series finale? If not, he will not have completed a single book during the run of the show. That makes for a very long winter, indeed.
